Visit & Discover

From the magnificent abbey to the romantic cellar lane, from the Karikaturmuseum to the forest adventure world – there is plenty awaiting discovery in the Kremstal!

Stift Göttweig

Directly across the Danube from Krems, situated on a hill and visible from afar, the Benedictine Göttweig Abbey appears like a magnificent palace complex. The extraordinary baroque construction impresses not only from a distance, but also when visiting the site – here in particular, the monumental Kaiserstiege (probably the most imposing staircase in Austria), Paul Troger’s frescoes, the abbey church, and the museum in the imperial wing.

The Old Town of Krems

Krems is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the most beautiful cities in the state of Niederösterreich. No other municipality has such similarly rich & diverse historical substance to it. Medieval streets and historically noteworthy buildings from the late Gothic, Renaissance & Baroque periods abound in the old town. Romantic arcade courtyards, sociable cafés and cozy locals with outdoor dining invite you to stroll & linger. Krems has been awarded the Europa Nostra diploma, one of the most prestigious international awards, for its exemplary renovation of the old town. Also well worth seeing: the old town of the district Stein – quieter, more romantic and equipped with even more Heurigen than the old town in Krems.

Cellar Lanes of the Kremstal

These treasures of wine’s cultural heritage – which worldwide can only be found in Niederösterreich – are a must for every oenophile visitor. More than a hundred cellar lanes have been dug into the ground in the neighbourhood of Krems. The reason for this is the soil called loess, which consists of fine, highly compressed sand, therefore offering little resistance to the shovel. Here one can also visit some of the most beautiful cellar lanes: with 2.1 km of unprecedented length and seventy cellar-houses in Rohrendorf, branched out extravagantly in Gedersdorf, with great views in Rehberg, or of a colourful nature in Höbenbach. For most of the year the cellar lanes are idyllic oases of unhurried ease. But when the cellar lane festivals that take place from June to September begin, the quiet times are over. Cellar doors open up and the treasures stored behind them are presented for inspection & sampling. In addition, home-style cooking is served: sometimes hearty dishes, sometimes refined delicacies from the winegrowers’ kitchens. Most of the hustle & bustle prevails at the big festivals in the better-known lanes such as in Rohrendorf, Höbenbach, Rehberg, Stratzing, Thallern or in the Kremser Leithen. There are high times here with wine tastings, special delicacies and music – to then fall back into picturesque silence for another year.

Senftenberg Castle Ruins

This historic castle, built right into the rocks, watches over the wine village of Senftenberg and the Krems River Valley, which is quite narrow here. The sensitively renovated structure from the Middle Ages offers a magnificent view of the Kremstal. Guided tours & wine tastings are offered by appointment.

Walderlebniswelt Göttweig

In Paudorf, at the foot of the Göttweiger Berg, an educational forest trail leads to the arboretum with its more than fifty species of trees, including rarities from all over the world. The highlights of the tour – in the truest sense of the word – are the sequoia trees forty metres tall, the seeds of which were brought from California by a dignitary from Göttweig Abbey and planted around 1880.
