Characterised by the dynamic interplay of warm, Pannonian influences from the east and cooler air currents from the north. During the day, the region often warms up quickly, but cooling air masses coming down from the higher-altitude Waldviertel region ensure marked differences between day and night temperatures. This has a positive effect on aroma development during grape ripening and preserves a refreshing acidity. The Danube plays an important role, dividing the region in two whilst exerting its temperature-regulating influence. The river\u2019s waters have a cooling effect in summer, but can also release heat as the cold sets in. Primary rock soils (more precisely: weathered primary rock soils) are found in the vineyards on the border with the Wachau and then extend up through the Kremstal proper as far as Senftenberg. Typical of these soils are the steep terraced slopes bounded by stone walls. It is a curious rock: on the one hand, so soft that you can grind chunks of it into dust with your bare hands; on the other, so stable that you can not only dig deep cellars into it, but also create steep slopes and terraces many metres high. The vines benefit from its ability to store heat and water, as well as its high mineral content. The loess was blown in towards the end of the Ice Ages by the wind, which carried the dust from rapidly drying mudflats into the Kremstal valley and piled it up here in layers up to 25 metres high. A wide variety of rock types and soils can be found here. Near the Danube, the subsoil is often composed of quartz-rich and calcareous Danube gravel, overlain by fertile loess or black earth \u2013 fine alluvial material \u2013 deposited by the wind during the Ice Age. Further south, calcareous loess predominates; its walls, which rise up here and there, form picturesque sunken paths used by bee-eaters for nesting.    <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #333333\">In the south-eastern quarter of the Kremstal valley \u2013 from Hollenburg via Krustetten to H\u00f6benbach \u2013 the subsoil consists of the so-called Hollenburg-Karlstetten Formation, comprising gravel and isolated layers of marl. The ancient Traisen River, flowing down from the Kalkalpen to the south, carried rock material on its journey into the Paratethys Sea \u2013 which has long since disappeared \u2013 and over a period of 15 million years this material solidified into a calcareous, cemented conglomerate. <\/span> <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column
