The history

Viticulture in particular has shaped the city and the region over the centuries and still does so today. In the early Middle Ages it was the representatives of numerous Bavarian monasteries who planted vineyards and reading yards in the Krems Valley. The wine was a valuable commodity and was shipped up the Danube, the church used the wine as a sacrificial wine in the liturgy and of course for daily use at the table. But you don’t live from history alone: thanks to the construction of the Kremser Kunstmeile, which has a handful of unique institutions with the Nieder\u00f6sterreichische Landesgalerie, the Kunsthalle and the Caricature Museum, modern art is omnipresent. In addition, Krems has a noticeably high density of excellent restaurants.
